Winter Walking - January 2025
North Wales 31st January-2nd February
The CMC’s first official meet of 2025 was none other than a roaring success, with a great time had by all- enjoying plenty of hill walking and some climbing. Whilst it was a fairly small group in total, there was no hesitation in making sure desired routes and plans were achieved over the weekend.
With most of the group arriving late Friday evening, everybody was up and ready Saturday morning for the day ahead. The group split into two- with Alex B and Chris heading to Cadair Idris for some climbing, and the remainder of the group heading to Nantlle Ridge for hill-walking.
With the benefit of the weather on their side, Alex and Chris completed their full day of climbing; tackling Cadair Idris, Table Direct and into Cyfrwry Arete, with Alex achieving his aim of getting decent training in for upcoming trips and Chris bagging his first CMC climb!
Meanwhile- Ian, Emma, Alex J, Rich, Sophie, Esme and Billy set off along Nantlle Ridge, reaching three summits and conquering some tough high winds. While the conditions were slightly bleak, rain was avoided the whole day and spirits remained high- fuelled by hot tea flasks and bad jokes at the top of summits! Sophie and Emma achieved personal milestones completing a more difficult walking route, and Alex J completed his first CMC hill-walking meet. The day ended with re-grouping for some well-deserved pub grub, along with Chris’s banana bread in front of the lounge fire (which earned its place as a trip highlight for many!).
With the weather on Sunday turning slightly wetter, Sophie and Esme took the opportunity to head off early into Llanberis for some desired gear shopping, while the rest of the group headed off to Cnicht for one last hike. Climbing the ridge up along the Cambrian Way, stunning coastal views to the west were taken in by all, with a snow-capped Snowdon spotted to the north. A circular route was chosen for the way back, descending into the Rhoysdd Quarry before following the Snowdonia Slate Trail. The miners’ track followed along past historic mining ruins- with plenty of curious sheep wandering over to say hello along the way!
Overall, a joyfully successful trip and a great start to the CMC year.
