Joining the CMC

The CMC is a fully inclusive club, accepting climbers of all abilities - including complete beginners. Junior members (under 18s) are welcome however, they must be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian who is a full member of The CMC.

Before joining, we welcome all prospective members to contact us, and then meet us at one of our regular club nights at The Lock in Harlow, on Thursday evenings, or Rock Hub, Basildon on Tuesday evenings. After climbing with us and having met some of our members we will ask you to fill out our membership form and pay your membership fees.

To climb at the walls, you will need to either pass the wall safety tests (tying in and belaying safely) or be accompanied by a competent and registered climber who will supervise you.

The local climbing walls run ‘Learn to Climb’ courses for those who are new to the sport and need to learn the basics. These teach everything required to become a safe and independent, indoor climber and set you up perfectly for joining the club.

To register your interest or if you have any queries about the CMC please get in contact using the the link below.

As Chelmsford Mountaineering Club Chairman, my aim is for the club to provide safe and rewarding climbing, mountaineering and outdoor experiences for our members whatever their grade or ability.

In the UK we are fortunate to have a wide and varied range of climbing and mountaineering areas within a relatively small country. We have everything from sunny sea cliffs, amazing trad routes to world class winter ice and mixed routes (and everything in between.) I love the UK’s traditional ethic of lead placed protected climbing and this has helped the UK produce some of the most accomplished and talented climbers and mountaineers the world has ever seen.

Could you be the next one?”

— Piers Harley, CMC Chairman

Membership and Benefits

Club subscriptions are £32.00 for the year’s membership, and this includes your British Mountaineering Council club membership.

With our BMC club affiliation, all of our members receive personal liability insurance, as well as gear discounts in a range of outdoor stores.

We meet twice a week for indoor climbing (with discounted member’s rates) and run outdoor meets most months of the year - the full list of upcoming meets can be found on our meets page.

In addition to our ‘official’ club meets, members are always organising their own trips to local crags or further afield and joining the club is a great way to get involved.

We also organise social meets which range from the annual End of Year Social in North Wales, to exclusive Pizza nights at our local walls. These are great events where you can get to know everyone and hone your knowledge for the great outdoors!
